False negative Pap smears are a frequent cause of lawsuits, based both on real laboratory error, but also on the misperception that Pap smear screening is an exact science and that any false negative test may be the result of negligence.
In clinical trials, the device demonstrated as much as a five-fold improvement in the detection of false negative Pap smear slides over a standard 10 percent random quality control procedure.
