extender /ex·ten·der/ (ek-sten´der) something that enlarges or prolongs.
artificial plasma extender  a substance that can be transfused to maintain fluid volume of the blood in event of great necessity, supplemental to the use of whole blood and plasma.

something that causes an increase in time or size, such as a substance added to a medication to stretch the time required for the drug to be absorbed, such as a plasma volume extender.
