exploding bullet

A bullet which contains an internal charge—e.g., tetryl and phosphorus, lead azide or Pyrodex—with or without mercury additives. While exploding bullets are popular in pulp and Hollywood fiction, after John Hinckley used Devastator (exploding) bullets in his assassination attempt on President Reagan in 1981, sales of exploding bullets have been severely restricted.
