exhaust fumes

fumes given off by vehicles; contain some carbon monoxide, the amount varying with the efficiency of combustion in the particular engine. In most engines the use of exhaust fumes for euthanasia is not recommended because it operates partly on the carbon dioxide content, and if the content is high the animal dies slowly of asphyxia. Car exhaust fumes also contain significant amounts of lead, if the petrol/gasoline is still leaded, and foliage receiving a lot of exhaust deposit can cause lead poisoning in animals eating it. See also lead1 poisoning.
