exercise tolerance test (ETT)

also known as exercise stress test . An electrocardiogram (ECG) is recorded while the subject is walking on a treadmill or using a cycle ergometer. Patients with suspected or confirmed heart disease are studied using standard protocols, which allow subsequent results to be compared. Continuous ECG recording and interval blood pressure measurements are made throughout the test. Changes may be seen in the ECG that are characteristic of heart disease. This allows initial diagnosis to be confirmed, progress monitored and a risk stratification made for individual patients. See also Bruce protocol.
