Birth control pills with the least androgenic activity include: Norgestimate (in Ortho-Cyclen, Ortho Tri-Cyclen), Norethindrone (in Ovcon 35), Desogestrel (in Mircette), or Ethynodiol Diacetate (in Demulen, Zovia).
In contrast, all preparations containing the progestogen ethynodiol diacetate were associated with an increased incidence of fibroids, regardless of the quantity present or the type or amount of the accompanying estrogen.
The group taking a Pill with the progestin ethynodiol diacetate showed the only increase in HDL cholesterol and the largest increase in apolipoprotein A-1 levels, while the group taking a Pill with levonorgestrel showed the largest decrease in HDL cholesterol and the smallest increase in apolipoprotein A-1 levels.
