ether, diethyl (ē´thər, dīeth´il),

n (ethyl ether, ether [C2H5]2O) a volatile ether used as an anesthetic that causes excellent muscle relaxation with minimal effect on blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiration. It is irritating to the respiratory passages and produces nausea.
