polycythaemia vera

raised levels of blood haemoglobin, erythrocytes and packed cell volume; presents as tiredness, depression, vertigo, tinnitus, visual disturbance, plethoric facies, hypertension, angina, intermittent claudication and bleeding tendency; patients experience itching when hot, and may develop gout; 5% develop acute myeloblastic leukaemia; tends to affect older subjects (>60 years)
