equilibrium reaction

automatic, reflexive, compensatory movements of body parts that restore and maintain the center of gravity over the base of support when the center of gravity of the supporting surface is displaced. Equilibrium reactions begin to develop around 6 months of age. See also general adaptation syndrome,local adaptation syndrome. Also called equilibrium responses.
