epulis /epu·lis/ (e-pu´lis) pl. epu´lides   [Gr.]
1. a nonspecific term used for tumors and tumorlike masses of the gingiva.

giant cell epulis  a sessile or pedunculated lesion of the gingiva, representing an inflammatory reaction to injury or hemorrhage.

Inflammatory cellular proliferation or a tumorlike growth of the gum that may be present at birth.

epulis (epū´lis),
n a tumor (tumescence) of the gingiva.
epulis, congenital of newborn,
n a raised or pedunculated lesion located on the anterior gingivae of the newborn. It is histologically similar to granular cell myoblastoma. See also myoblastoma, granular cell.
epulis fissuratum
(fisrat´m),
n a curtainlike fold of excess tissue associated with the flange of a denture. Also called
inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia, redundant tissue.

epulis, giant cell,
epulis granulomatosa
n a tumorlike mass of red, easily bleeding, infected granulation tissue that occurs as a result of exuberant reparative phenomena. Seen arising from tooth sockets or is associated with exfoliating necrotic bone. See granulation tissue.

epulis
pl. epulides [Gr.] a benign tumor of mixed cell origin arising from periodontal squamous cell residues.

acanthomatous epulis
a locally invasive, sometimes recurrent, tumor of the gums of dogs and sometimes cats. Called also oral adamantinoma.
giant-cell epulis
see periodontal fibromatous epulis (below).
ossifying epulis
has a greater abundance of hard tissue, osteoid, bone and cementum than fibromatous epulides.
periodontal fibromatous epulis
firm, nodular benign structures on the lingual or labial gum margins, resembling normal gingiva in color and texture. Common in dogs, particularly the brachycephalic breeds. Considered by some to be hyperplastic rather than neoplastic. Called also giant-cell epulis.
