[ipif′isī′tis]
an inflammation of the epiphysis, usually of a long bone, such as the femur or humerus. The disorder mainly affects children.

epiphysitis [e-pif″ĭ-si´tis]
inflammation of an epiphysis or of the cartilage joining the epiphysis to a bone shaft.

epiphysitis
a lesion observed radiologically at the epiphyses of long bones and the ends of ribs of animals affected by osteodystrophy. Clinically there is swelling of the bone and there may be subsequent epiphysiolysis or separation of the femoral head. See also osteodystrophy, physeal dysplasia.
