electric sector

electric sector

A device constructed of curved, parallel metal plates that creates an electrostatic field perpendicular to the ion path in mass spectrometry. The sector selects and focuses ions of the same kinetic energy but, because it does not separate ions by mass or charge, is always used in conjunction with a magnetic analyser, often in a double-focusing mass spectrometer.
