extensor hallucis longus; EHL extrinsic foot muscle lying within anterior muscle compartment of lower leg
origin from middle 2/4 of medial surface of fibula, medial to extensor digitorum longus, tendon passes down lower leg lateral to anterior border of tibia but medial to tendon of extensor digitorum longus
insertion tendon passes into dorsum of foot deep to extensor and distal retinacula, lying at dorsomedial aspect of foot to form a dorsal expansion, the central part of which passes to distal phalanx of hallux; lateral part of dorsal expansion passes to deep transverse metatarsal ligament and the medial part of expansion joins tendon of abductor hallucis
nerve supply deep peroneal nerve
action extension of phalanges of hallux and dorsiflexion of ankle joint; acts as an auxiliary invertor of foot when hallux is extended at the first metatarsophalangeal joint
