edging

Grinding the edge of a lens to the finished shape and size required, at the same time imparting the desired edge form, e.g. flat, bevelled, etc. This is accomplished with a machine called an edger, either by hand with a grinding wheel or automatically operating from a lens pattern or former. See cribbing; former; glass cutter; glazing.
