doxepin /dox·e·pin/ (dok´sĕ-pin) a tricyclic antidepressant of the dibenzoxepine class; also used to treat chronic pain, peptic ulcer, pruritus, and idiopathic cold urticaria, administered as the hydrochloride salt. doxepin (topical) (dok´s n brand name: Zonolon; drug class: topical antipruritic (tricyclic antidepressant); action: antipruritic mechanism unknown; has antihistaminic activity; also produces drowsiness; uses: pruritus associated with eczema, atopic dermatitis, lichen simplex chronicus. doxepin a tricyclic antidepressant and potent histamine H1-receptor blocker, similar to amitriptyline, used in the treatment of psychogenic dermatitis in dogs and cats.
