A congenital defect of the aorta in which both of the dorsal embryonic aortae persist and encircle the trachea and esophagus; after birth, and consequent to the aorta's growth in a region with limited space, the ring produces a relative constriction, resulting in stridor and dysphagia. Cf Double-barreled aorta.

FOR the last two months, my family has been through the dreadful ordeal of having to live with the fact that the baby boy born to my great-niece in September has serious complications, including a hole-in-the-heart, a double aorta, (and a damaged windpipe resulting from it) also a narrowed pulmonary vein.
The typical reptilian heart, with its incompletely divided ventricle and double aorta, is quite functional at separating oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
