terminal branch of superficial peroneal nerve; innervates medial aspect of first ray and second intermetatarsal space; may become compressed (entrapped) at first metatarsal-medial cuneiform joint area, causing dermatomal distal paraesthesia and pain (see intermediate dorsal cutaneous nerve)
