An administrative unit of the NHS which subsumed the duties of area health authorities, and operated in England and Wales from 1982 onwards. DHAs were dismantled—along with the family health services authorities and regional health authorities—in 1996, and their duties taken over by the corresponding health authority, and then by strategic health authorities in 2002.
