disseminated peritoneal adenomucinosis

A term relatively recent inception meant to partially replace the antiquated, nonspecific and confusing term pseudomyxoma peritonei, which has been applied to mucinous ascites arising in both benign and malignant tumours of the appendix. Experts of the field now use the term disseminated peritoneal adenomucinosis for the benign end of the spectrum and peritoneal mucinous carcinomatosis for those with histologically malignant features (e.g., significant architectural and cytologic atypia) that have a less felicitous outcome.

DPAM is one of three conditions (along with peritoneal mucinous carcinomatosis and peritoneal mucinous carcinomatosis) that arise in pseudomyxoma peritonei, which must be distinguished therefrom because of DPAM’s better prognosis—5-year and 10-year survival rates of 75% and 68%, respectively.
