changes in metabolism that result from disease and medications administered to control diseases. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patients, for example, may experience severe malnutrition, wasting, weight loss, hypermetabolism, and altered energy metabolism. Human immunodeficiency virus causes blunting of intestinal villi and secretion of abnormal intestinal enzymes, resulting in severe diarrhea and malabsorption.
