direct amplification test,

a method used to rapidly identify pathogenic organisms found in patient specimens. The RNA of an organism is copied (amplified) and then detected by using a nucleic acid probe. A small number of viruses and bacteria can be identified in a few hours in comparison to days or weeks needed for culturing.
