Diplococcus /Dip·lo·coc·cus/ (-kok´us) former name for a genus of bacteria of the tribe Streptococceae. D. pneumo´niae is now called Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Diplococci are often found as parasites or saprophytes. 2 adj, describing bacteria of the Coccaceae family, which occur as pairs of cocci.
