diphenylamine test

diphenylamine test

An obsolete test formerly used to detect nitrates and nitrites in gunpowder residues alleged to be present on the hands of an individual suspected of using a firearm; the test was abandoned given that nitrates and nitrites are often present on non-criminal hands, given their ubiquity in food preservatives, pharmaceuticals and tobacco.
