n a dietary system that recommends consuming a diet that comprises 40% carbohydrates, 30% protein, and 30% fat. Foods with high levels of carbohydrates and fats, such as starches, grains and pastas, are restricted. Vegetables and fruits are emphasized as a source of carbohydrates. The amount of protein is limited to foods that have low levels of fat and are not thicker and bigger than the palm of a hand. Consumption of canola oil, olive oil, macadamia nuts, almonds, and avocados that are sources of monounsaturated fats is advised. The system was developed by Barry Sears. See also diet, Atkins.
