The period of sexual quiescence intervening between two periods of estrus.

di·estrous (-trs) adj.

diestrus
the resting period between estral periods of animals. The female rejects the male, blood levels of estrogens are minimal and progesterone levels are high. This provides a physiological state in the uterus which is most conducive for implantation and growth of the developing fetus. Diestrus is terminated by luteolytic factors, such as prostaglandin F secreted by the endometrium, if pregnancy does not occur.
