Q. I heard that the major risk in diarrhea is dehydration, why is that? How can I avoid that? Are there other dehydration causes I should beware of?

A. When you get diarrhea your excrements move from solid to liquid… that means that instead of absorbing the water you drink- you just see them go back to nature without helping too much. So your body which excretes an average amount of 5 liters a day by breathing, urine, perspiration and so forth – doesn’t get the amount of water he needs to survive. And you get dehydrated. This is why you need to drink plenty of water while acute diarrhea.

Q. What are the symptoms of salmonella infection?

A. Dehydration is the principal clinical concern. The incubation period – the time between ingestion of Salmonella bacteria and the onset of illness – varies from six to 72 hours.Salmonella can cause three different kinds of illness: gastroenteritis, typhoid fever, and bacteremia.Symptoms of Salmonella gastroenteritis include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting.In mild cases diarrhea may be non-bloody, occur several times per day, and not be very voluminous; in severe cases it may be frequent, bloody and/or mucoid, and of high volume. Fever generally occurs in the 100°F to 102°F (38°C to 39°C) range. Vomiting is less common than diarrhea. Headaches, myalgias (muscle pain), and arthralgias (joint pain) are often reported as well.Whereas the diarrhea typically lasts 24 to 72 hours, patients often report fatigue and other nonspecific symptoms lasting 7 days or longer. Q. My Sister has Diarrhea for 3 days is it Salmonella? My Sister and I went out to a Chinese restaurant last week to celebrate my Birthday. A couple of days later my Sister became ill and has stomach aches and diarrhea. Is it Salmonella?

A. If the illness was caused by eating in the restaurant, then it could be Salmonella or food poisoning.
Salmonella are usually transmitted to humans by eating foods contaminated with animal feces. Contaminated foods usually look and smell normal. Contaminated foods are often of animal origin, such as beef, poultry, milk, or eggs, but all foods, including vegetables may become contaminated. Many raw foods of animal origin are frequently contaminated, but fortunately, thorough cooking kills Salmonella. Food may also become contaminated by the unwashed hands of an infected food handler, who forgot to wash his or her hands with soap after using the bathroom.
