Etymology: Gk, diabainein, to pass through, amauroein, to darken
blindness associated with diabetes mellitus, caused by a proliferative hemorrhagic form of retinopathy that is characterized by capillary microaneurysms and hard or waxy exudates. Cataracts are also common in type 2 diabetes; in type 1 diabetes, snowflake cataract may progress until the entire lens is milky white.
