dewclaw 1. the rudimentary first digit of dogs and cats, found on the inner side of the front legs, above the weight-bearing digits. These are commonly removed from puppies at an early age because of the susceptibility to injury throughout life. Occasionally found on the hindlegs of some dogs and in some breeds this is required, e.g. the Great Pyrenees dog and Briard in which double rear dewclaws must be present. 2. the accessory claws of the ruminant foot. dewclaw slough sequel to laminitis, severe edema of the lower extremity, severe coronitis.
