devocalization
surgical interference with the voice-producing mechanism to prevent annoying noise made by the animal. In the dog and sealion the operation is a resection of the vocal cords. Equine devocalization was an important procedure for mounted units in wartime; it was a ventriculectomy with added cord resection for a greater level of muting. In the peacock devocalization is carried out by scarification of the mucosa of the syrinx.
