deviation of tongue

Etymology: L, deviare, to turn aside; AS, tunge
a tendency of the tongue to turn away from the midline when extended or protruded. The condition is associated with a hypoglossal nerve defect, and the tongue deviates to the side of the injured nerve. Also called tongue deviation.

Marked turning of the tongue from the midline when protruded, indicative of lesions of the hypoglossal nerve.
