Ideker and his team, while at Duke, discovered in animal experiments that a biphasic waveform-a lower, safer shock made up of a jolt of electricity followed by a weaker pulse-effectively defibrillates the heart. The study showed that "the RLB successfully defibrillates the pediatric size piglet at significantly lower energies than the MDS (Monophasic Damped Sine). For the highest risk patients, increasingly, the preferred treatment modality is the surgical placement of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) that automatically defibrillates the heart back into normal rhythm. |
