any of the ruminant quadrupeds included in the family Cervidae.

the Cervidae family. Includes 17 genera and 53 species. The principal members are deer, elk, reindeer, wapitii, muntjack and sika. The common species are: black-tailed deer (odocoileushemionus columbiana), Columbian white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus, Dama virginianus); chevrotain (Tragulus spp.); mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus); muntjac (Muntiacus spp.); père david's deer (Elaphurus davidianus); fallow deer (Dama dama); roe deer (Capreolus capreolus); axis deer (Axis axis); reindeer or caribou (Rangifer tarandus); red deer (Cervus elaphus); sambar deer (Rusa unicolor); wapiti (Cervus canadensis) called also American elk; hog deer (Axis porcinus); american moose (Alces americana).
