The sympathetic part of the greater petrosal nerve, which arises from the internal carotid plexus and joins the nerve at the entrance of the pterygoid canal.

deep petrosal nerve,
a nerve formed in the internal carotid plexus that leaves the plexus in the middle cranial fossa and joins the greater petrosal branch of the facial nerve. It carries postganglionic sympathetic fibers destined mainly for blood vessels.
