Decidual NK cells regulate key developmental processes at the human fetal-maternal interface.
An interesting histologic finding among the endometrial and myometrial necrosis was a profile of a vessel containing lesion that appeared similar to the fibrinoid necrosis and atherosis seen in maternal decidual vasculopathy in pregnancy (Figure).
Despite the prolonged direct exposure of decidual leukocytes and maternal blood to fetal antigens, the immune system does not recognize the fetus as foreign.
