bridge (brij) 1. a structure connecting two separate points, including parts of an organ. 2. a fixed partial denture. 3. tarsal coalition. cantilever bridge a bridge having an artificial tooth attached beyond the point of anchorage of the bridge. cytoplasmic bridge 2. see intercellular b. disulfide bridge see under bond. extension bridge cantilever b. intercellular bridge a misnomer for the appearance of the junction of epithelial cells at a desmosome as a result of dehydration during fixation; it was formerly thought to constitute a bridge for cytoplasmic continuity (cytoplasmic bridge). protoplasmic bridge a strand of protoplasm connecting two secondary spermatocytes, occurring as a result of incomplete cytokinesis.
