cyclotron
[sī′klətron]
Etymology: Gk, kyklos + electron, amber
a device used to accelerate charged particles or ions. The particles bombard targets where they create radioactive species, which can be used as radiopharmaceuticals or to make neutrons for radiotherapy.

cyclotron (sī´klträn),
n a device for accelerating charged particles to high energies by means of an alternating electrical field between electrodes placed in a constant magnetic field.

Radiation therapy A device used to accelerate charged particles–eg, protons to higher energy levels, in which a magnetic field causes the particles to orbit, which are accelerated by an oscillating electric field. Cf Radiotherapy.

Recently these cyclotrons have been coupled in tandem, greatly increasing the beam intensity for exploring rare exotic isotopes.
It is one of the few cyclotrons in the nation used for the treatment of cancer.
