[sī′klətron] Etymology: Gk, kyklos + electron, amber a device used to accelerate charged particles or ions. The particles bombard targets where they create radioactive species, which can be used as radiopharmaceuticals or to make neutrons for radiotherapy. cyclotron (sī´kl n a device for accelerating charged particles to high energies by means of an alternating electrical field between electrodes placed in a constant magnetic field.
