the normal formation and development of blood cells in the bone marrow. In severe anemia and other hematologic disorders, cells may be produced in organs outside the marrow (extramedullary hematopoiesis). See also erythropoiesis. hematopoietic, adj.

increased hematopoietic activity in response to a need for more cells; indicated by the presence of a higher than normal proportion of immature forms in the peripheral blood.
