pouch (pouch) a pocket or sac. abdominovesical pouch one formed by reflection of the peritoneum from the abdominal wall to the anterior surface of the bladder. branchial pouch pharyngeal p. pouch of Douglas rectouterine p. ileoanal pouch see under reservoir. Kock pouch 1. a continent ileal reservoir with a capacity of 500 to 1000 mL and a valve made by intussusception of the terminal ileum. 2. a modification of this pouch, used as a neobladder. pharyngeal pouch a lateral endodermal diverticulum of the pharynx that meets a corresponding pharyngeal groove in the embryonic ectoderm, forming a closing membrane. Prussak's pouch a recess in the tympanic membrane between the flaccid part of the membrane and the neck of the malleus. Rathke's pouch a diverticulum from the embryonic buccal cavity from which the adenohypophysis is developed. rectouterine pouch , rectovaginal pouch the space between the bladder and uterus in the female peritoneal cavity. rectovesical pouch the space between the rectum and the bladder in the male peritoneal cavity. Seessel's pouch an outpouching of the embryonic pharynx rostrad of the pharyngeal membrane and caudal to Rathke's pouch. vesicouterine pouch the space between the bladder and the uterus in the female peritoneal cavity.
pouch Etymology: OFr, pouche any small saclike appendage or pocket, such as Rathke's pouch in the embryonic roof cavity. See also cul-de-sac. pouch a pocket-like space, cavity or sac, e.g. one formed by bending back of the peritoneum on the surfaces of adjoining organs. See also bursa, pharyngeal pouch. abdominovesical pouch the pouchlike reflection of the peritoneum from the abdominal wall to the ventral surface of the bladder. adenohypophyseal pouch see Rathke's pouch (below). cutaneous pouch an invagination of the skin, especially a glandular invagination such as the infraorbital, inguinal or interdigital pouch of sheep (see below). guttural pouch see guttural pouch. infraorbital pouch a cutaneous pouch rostral to the medial canthus of the eye, 0.5 to 1 inch deep, in the sheep and many other ungulates. Called also lacrimal pouch. inguinal pouch an extensive cutaneous pouch in the inguinal region of male and female sheep. Called also mammary pouch. interdigital pouch occurs in the foot of the sheep and some other cloven-footed animals. Is a tubular invagination of the skin between the toes that anoints the hooves with its waxy secretion. lacrimal pouch see infraorbital pouch (above). mammary pouch see inguinal pouch (above). pubovesical pouch formed by a reflection of the peritoneum from the floor of the pelvis onto the neck of the bladder. Rathke's pouch a diverticulum from the embryonic buccal cavity from which the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland is developed. rectogenital pouch the pouch contained by the extension of the peritoneal cavity into the pelvic cavity between the rectum and the uterus or the uterus masculinus in the male. rectouterine pouch the pouch formed by the extension of the peritoneal cavity into the pelvic cavity between the uterus (or the uterus masculinus in the male) and the bladder. Seesel's pouch an outpouching of the embryonic pharynx rostrad to the pharyngeal membrane and caudal to Rathke's pouch. vesicogenital pouch the peritoneal pouch between the bladder and the genital fold in the male, or the uterus in the female. pouch Vox populi A bag or sac of tissue.
