Cryptococcus neoformans,
a species of encapsulated yeasts that causes cryptococcosis, a potentially fatal infection that can affect the lungs, skin, and brain. Cryptococcus a genus of yeastlike fungi. Cryptococcus farciminosum see histoplasmafarciminosum. Cryptococcus neoformans a species of worldwide distribution, causing cryptococcosis in all species including humans; there are two biovars, C. var neoformans, and C. var gattae.
