countercurrent /coun·ter·cur·rent/ (-kur″ent) flowing in an opposite direction. countercurrent, a change in the direction of flow of a fluid. An example is the countercurrent in the ascending branch of a kidney tubule where osmolality undergoes a reversal after a gradual change in sodium chloride concentrations. countercurrent flowing in an opposite direction. countercurrent exchanger a countercurrent system in which transport between the inflow and the outflow is passive. countercurrent multiplier a mechanism that enables a membrane to absorb much more solute than water so that the residual fluid has a lower osmotic pressure.
