One likely messenger is corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), ordinarily a stress hormone secreted by the brain but produced in pregnancy by the baby's placenta. That finding suggests that the entire "fight-or-flight" stress-response system based on corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) dates back to a common ancestor of vertebrates and insects. The PVN of the hypothalamus has a large number of corticotropin-releasing hormone neuronal cell bodies and receives rich noradrenergic innervation from the brainstem, through the ventral noradrenergic bundle (Petrusz and Merchenthaler 1992). |
