(of fascia lata) the lateral margin of the saphenous hiatus. 2. (of pelvic fascia) thickening of the superior fascia, from the ischial spine to the pubis. 3. Henle's ligament. frontonasal process see under prominence. funicular process the portion of the tunica vaginalis surrounding the spermatic cord. lacrimal process a process of the inferior nasal concha that articulates with the lacrimal bone. malar process zygomatic p. of maxilla. mammillary process a tubercle on the superior articular process of each lumbar vertebra. mandibular process see under prominence. mastoid process the conical projection at the base of the mastoid portion of the temporal bone. maxillary process 1. see under prominence. 2. (of inferior nasal concha): a bony process descending from the ethmoid process of the inferior nasal concha. nasal process, lateral see under prominence. nasal process, medial see under prominence. odontoid process of axis a toothlike projection of the axis that articulates with the atlas. pterygoid process one of the wing-shaped processes of the sphenoid. spinous process spine (1). spinous process of vertebrae a part of the vertebrae projecting backward from the arches, giving attachment to the back muscles. styloid process a long, pointed projection, especially a long spine projecting downward from the inferior surface of the temporal bone. uncinate process any hooklike process, as of a vertebra, the lacrimal bone, or the pancreas. xiphoid process the pointed process of cartilage, supported by a core of bone, connected with the lower end of the sternum. zygomatic process a projection in three parts, from the frontal bone, temporal bone, and maxilla, by which each articulates with the zygomatic bone.
process (pros´es, prō´ses), n 1. in anatomy, a marked prominence or projection of a bone. 2. in microanatomy, a protrusion of tissue. 3. in dentistry, a series of operations that convert a wax pattern, such as that of a denture base, into a solid denture base of another material. See also denture curing. process, alveolar, n the portion of the maxillae or mandible that forms the dental arch and serves as a bony investment for the teeth. Its cortical covering is continuous with the compact bone of the body of the maxillae or mandible, whereas its trabecular portion is continuous with the spongy bone of the body of the jaws. See also ridge, alveolar. process, condyloid n a projection of the mandible arising on the posterosuperior aspect of the mandibular ramus. It consists of a neck and an elliptically shaped head or condyle that enters into the formation of the temporomandibular joint in conjunction with the articular disk and the glenoid fossa of the temporal bone. process, coronoid, n the thin, triangular, rounded eminence originating from the anterosuperior surface of the ramus of the mandible. Provides insertion for the temporal muscle. process, dehiscence of alveolar, n See dehiscence. process, fenestration of alveolar n a circumscribed opening, located in the cortical plate over the root, that does not communicate with the crestal margin. process, hamular n (pterygoid process) the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone; appears as a vertical projection distal to the maxillary tuberosity. process, horizontal resorptive, n the pattern of bone resorption, occurring with periodontal disease, in which the resultant level of bone is more or less flat or level in nature. process, inferior articular, n the natural growth of bone that convexly projects in a forward lateral direction from the lumbar vertebrae. process, lateral nasal, n the triangular cartilage that spans the bridge of the nose and is attached below the nasal bone and the front of the maxilla. process, mandibular, n the stage of embryonic development during which two sections of the first branchial arch come together to create the mandibular arch. process, maxillary, n the stage of embryonic development during which a prominence off of the first branchial arch unites with the corresponding median nasal prominence to form the upper jaw. process, medial nasal, n a protrusion of tissue located midline to the olfactory pits during embryonic development from which the tip of the nose and philtrum of the lip develop. process, neck of condyloid, n the part of the condyloid process that connects the condyle to the main part of the ramus. process, odontoblastic n a structure of the tooth formed during dentogenesis. It becomes encased by predentin that eventually calcifies. process, pterygoid n See process, hamular. process, Tomes', n a narrow extension of the ameloblast from which the enamel matrix is secreted. coronoid process 1. a part of the mandible that projects into the temporal fossa and provides attachment for the temporal muscle. 2. the medial and lateral prominences located on either side of the trochlear notch of the ulna, forming part of the articular surface with the radius and humerus. fragmented coronoid process a developmental lesion of young, large breed dogs. Causes a weight-bearing lameness. May occur in association with osteochondritis dissecans of the medial humeral condyle.
