cor adipo´sum a heart that has undergone fatty degeneration or that has an accumulation of fat around it.

cor bovi´num a greatly enlarged heart resulting from a hypertrophied left ventricle.

cor pulmona´le a serious cardiac condition in which there is right ventricular heart failure due to pulmonary hypertension secondary to disease of the blood vessels of the lungs. Acute cor pulmonale is an emergency situation arising from a sudden dilatation of the right ventricle as a result of pulmonary embolism. Chronic cor pulmonale develops gradually and is associated with such chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases as emphysema, silicosis, and pulmonary fibrosis following an infection. These conditions impair pulmonary circulation and thus create a “damming” effect on the blood flowing through the pulmonary artery. This in turn slows down the flow of blood from the right ventricle, and the ventricle becomes hypertrophied and dilated.

Signs and symptoms are similar to those of congestive heart failure from other causes: dyspnea, edema of the lower extremities, enlargement of the liver, and distention of neck veins. The hematocrit is increased as the body attempts to compensate for impaired circulation by producing more erythrocytes.

Treatment. Treatment may involve use of drugs to decrease pulmonary vascular resistance, pulmonary embolectomy, or even lung transplantation. More traditional treatments have included administration of bronchodilators and use of a mechanical ventilator to reduce hypoxia and dyspnea. For treatment of the heart failure, see heart failure.

a rare congenital heart defect in which the left atrium is divided into two distinct chambers by a fibromuscular membrane.

cor triloculare

a congenital defect of a heart with three chambers, which may be one atrium or one ventricle.

cor villosum

means hairy heart; when the epicardium is covered with shaggy fibrinous tags as a result of chronic pericarditis.

Q. Why does Aortic stenosis causes an enlarged heart? My father was recently diagnosed as suffering from enlarged heart due to his Aortic stenosis. what is the connection between those to conditions? As far as I understand that aortic stenosis mean that the aortic valve is too small not too large...

A. The connection between those pathologies is mainly mechanical. because your father's valve is smaller, less amount of blood can be ejected in every heart bit. because of that the heart is working harder. the heart is a muscle and like other muscles in our body when it "works out" it gets bigger

Q. I understtod that massive beer drinking can lead to heart enlargemt is it true? how much beer is ok to drink? I am a 22 years old collage student. we drink a lot of beer every weekend and someone said it can lead to vitamin deficiency and to an enlarged heart. how can i know if i drink too much beer? is there any thing i can do to decrease my chance for enlarged heart?

A. Drinking beer can lead to many consequences like hypertension problems with the blood lipids and to Dilated cardiomyopathy - an enlarged heart. its hard to say how much is OK to drink, but drinking 1 can every day can lead to this situation.
If you feel you drink to much, go to your physician and he will refer you to the closest AA group.

Q. What causes Cardiomegaly? My Husband has had a physical checkup and has found to have Cardiomegaly. What does it mean and what causes it?

A. Cardiomegaly means an enlarged heart and it is a sign of an underlying problem. It can have many causes, including:

High blood pressure
Heart valve disorders
Weakness of the heart muscle (cardiomyopathy)
Severe anemia
Thyroid disorders
Excessive iron in the body (hemochromatosis)
Abnormal protein buildup in an organ (amyloidosis)
