foal
a junior horse from birth to one year. May be filly foal, colt foal.

foal ataxia
see enzootic equine incoordination.
contracted foal
congenital flexion contracture of the distal limb joints, plus torticollis, scoliosis, skull distortion; cause unknown.
foal hemolytic disease
see alloimmune hemolytic anemia of the newborn.
foal heat
the first estrus after foaling. Usually commences at the 7th to 15th day.
foal heat diarrhea
a transient attack of diarrhea in the foal at the time of the mare's foaling heat, ascribed to excitement and subtle changes in composition of the milk.
foal MAC test
a field test on blood to detect low blood levels of immunoglobulins (IgG) in foals.
foal mortality
deaths in foals as a group; include congenital defects, immaturity, foaling injury, septicemia, joint ill, enteritis, shigellosis, barkers and wanderers, isoimmune hemolytic anemia.
foal restraint
generally achieved by holding against a wall and using one arm under the neck and the other hand lifting the tail.
foal septicemia
common causes, usually from intrauterine infection contracted through the cervix of the dam, are Actinobacillus equuli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and ß-hemolytic streptococci.
