Tip is widely preferred for external structures (e.g., tip of nose, tip of tongue); apex is more commonly used for internal structures, as in the apex of the lung (the superior-most part of the lung), the heart (the heart formed by the left ventricle, its inferior-most portion) and teeth (the tip of a tooth root).
