Etymology: L, con + nectere, to bind
a disk of fibrocartilage found between many joints, especially those with limited mobility, such as the spinal vertebrae. Each disk is composed of concentric rings of fibrous tissue separated by cartilaginous laminae. The disk swells outward if it is compressed by the vertebrae above or below. Compare circumferential fibrocartilage, interarticular fibrocartilage, stratiform fibrocartilage.
