conjugation /con·ju·ga·tion/ (kon″jdbobr-ga´shun) 1. the act of joining together. 2. in unicellular organisms, a form of sexual reproduction in which two cells join in temporary union to transfer genetic material. 3. in chemistry, the joining together of two compounds to produce another compound.
conjugation [kon′jəgā′shən] an exchange or transfer of genetic information between two individuals in certain types of unicellular organisms, including bacteria and some protozoa. In Paramecium, for example, both partners swap micronuclear material.
