Any inborn error of metabolism causing hyperplasia of the cortex of suprarenal gland and overproduction of virilizing hormones. Most forms are due to partial or complete 21-hydroxylase deficiency, leading to increased adrenocorticotropic hormone production by the pituitary, stimulating adrenal growth and function. Clinical features include ambiguous genitalia, virilization, and salt-wasting.
