melanosis /mel·a·no·sis/ (mel″ah-no´sis) melanism; disordered production of melanin, with darkening of the skin. melanosis co´li black or dark brown discoloration of the mucosa of the colon, due to the presence of pigment-laden (not true melanin) macrophages within the lamina propria. neurocutaneous melanosis giant hairy nevus accompanied by malignant melanomas of the meninges.
melanosis. See melanism. melanosis (mel´ n the condition in which melanin pigments appear in the tissues. Melanosis is normal in the gingivae of most dark-skinned individuals and occasionally in those with light skin.

If there is a larger quantity than normal of pigment in the tissues of the eye, the condition is referred to as melanosis bulbi (melanosis oculi) or primary acquired melanosis when on the conjunctival epithelium and limbus. It may extend onto the peripheral cornea. It may be benign or become malignant, in which case nodules appear and excision or cryotherapy is required. See naevus of Ota.
